Discover Carolina provides students in the Lowcountry with an opportunity to study local natural resources in a non-traditional environment, while improving on their academic skills. Participating local students transform Hunting Island into their own classroom.
Teaching marine and barrier island ecology to children who have never even seen a beach is a difficult job. We have the opportunity to show them a living classroom and provide an educational experience that could never be achieved in a traditional classroom. Some students investigate the survival and protection of Loggerhead turtles. After their experiences, students leave with a new awareness of marine ecology and the wonders of life on a barrier island.
Through the Pelican Plunge, an annual fund-raising event, Friends of Hunting Island has been able to contribute to the Discover Carolina program. We have exceeded the 3000 mark in the number of 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade students who have participated in these successful educational programs on Hunting Island.
We need only two things to provide the services and projects you see described on this website: your participation and your tax-deductible membership fees. For one $40 membership contribution, you and your family can join Friends of Hunting Island and have unlimited access to the park for one year. All members are encouraged to participate in any of our on-going projects. If you do not wish to join, but want to donate to our efforts, click here to make a tax-deductible donation to the Friends of Hunting Island.
